What might this be?

As a psychologist, that was the first question I was taught to ask when administering the Rorschach Inkblot Test. The idea was to get patients to project their innermost thoughts, fears, and desires onto an ambiguous picture.

Its been years since Ive given a Rorschach, but I am still intrigued by the idea that people interpret art based on their underlying predispositions. For years Ive been playing with the juxtaposition of some very basic shapes that are immediately accessible, yet somewhat ambiguous. In this way viewers can attribute their own meanings to my work.

In this app, you have an opportunity to create the art in the style Ive been making for years. The emphasis here is not on complexity, but how you can create compelling images with a few simple shapes and a few basic colors.

Tap a loupe to select and color an image for each of the six layers. Then, use pinch gestures to resize the images. Drag the thumbnails to reorder the layers.

When youre satisfied with your work, you can choose to post it to my website. The app will ask you for a title. Then, when others view your image, they will be asked "What Might This Be?"

You can also choose to share the image on Facebook or Twitter.

Be sure to visit my shop. Send me an email to ask about turning your submission into your very own piece of projective art.
